This course is intended for shooters who are newer to the defensive use of firearms. Expect skill development in the areas of pistol manipulation, marksmanship, & safe utilization of the defensive pistol. Although an introductory course it should not be confused with a "basic" course.

About the Event

This is a developmental skills course focused on the practical use of the defensive pistol.    It is a great course to continue your training progression and will provide an opportunity to learn new skills while improving upon your existing skill set.  The material will be presented in a low stress crawl, walk, run manner and in an easy to understand building block approach.  Focus areas will be safe gun handling, proper manipulation of your handgun, shooting accurately at practical distances, understanding key concepts related to self defense, increased confidence, and of course having fun.


This course is available in a Ladies Only or Private Instruction / Small Group format.  Please contact us to explore those options.


PRE-REQUISITES: CCW or other equivalent experience preferred but not required.  We would prefer that this course is not the first time you will have fired a handgun.  If that is the case please contact us in advance so we can be prepared to support your needs.


Points of Instruction (POI) Include:

  • Selection criteria for a defensive handgun (key considerations)

  • Selection criteria for defensive handgun accessories like holsters, ammo pouches, etc.

  • Legal requirements for Ohio CCW

  • Lawful use of deadly force discussion

  • Safe loading & unloading of the pistol or revolver

  • Proper firearm control manipulations

  • Introduction to the 4 step practical draw procedure

  • Introduction to ready and carry positions

  • Introduction to speed reloading the pistol or revolver

  • Introduction to practical defensive marksmanship standards

  • Specific developmental focus dependant upon the student(s) skill levels

Equipment Required:

  • Modern defensive pistol or revolver

  • Properly fitted IWB or OWB holster suggested but not required

  • 2-3 pistol magazines / 2 revolver speed loaders

  • Belt pouch for handgun reload suggested but not required

  • Factory produced training ammunition matching your firearm's caliber (est. 150 rds - bring 200 rds just in case you're having too much fun to stop)

  • Eye protection (safety glasses or poly carbonate lenses in prescription eye ware)

  • Ear protection (electronic shooting ear muffs highly suggested)

  • Seasonally appropriate clothing suitable for outdoor activities (no low scooped neck shirts or tops)

  • Closed toe shoes or boots suitable for outdoor activities

  • A baseball style cap or visor to help protect your face

  • Water, sports drinks, & snacks to maintain yourself during moderate physical activity for the training day

  • Please note that the range facility does not have running water or improved facilities
