Defensive Pistol Foundational Skills & Ohio CCW Training

This course is a developmental skills block focused on the practical use of the defensive pistol. It is designed for shooters who are newer to defensive handgun use, as well as those seeking a structured refresher grounded in professional instruction.

While introductory in nature, this course should not be confused with a casual or minimal “basic” class. Instruction emphasizes practical firearm safety, proper handgun manipulation, accurate shooting at realistic distances, and foundational defensive concepts that carry forward into more advanced training.

Material is presented in a low-stress crawl, walk, run format using a clear building-block approach. The goal is to develop safe habits, foundational skills, confidence, and sound judgment while maintaining an approachable and supportive learning environment.

This course is well suited for:

• New handgun owners seeking professional guidance

• Returning shooters looking to refresh core skills

• Students preparing to enter the Practical Defensive Pistol track

Optional Ohio CCW Training

Students may elect to complete the Ohio Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) training in conjunction with this course.

Ohio CCW classroom instruction is provided via a remote interactive online session prior to the scheduled range day.

Successful completion of both the classroom and range components meets or exceeds Ohio CCW training requirements.

Even with Ohio’s permitless carry laws, an Ohio CCW license remains necessary for:

• Concealed carry reciprocity in other states

• Carry on certain federal properties

• Simplified firearm purchases without an additional background check

Participation in the CCW component is optional and does not change the live-fire curriculum.

Instructional Emphasis

• Practical firearm safety and safe gun handling

• Proper loading and unloading procedures

• Fundamental handgun manipulation

• Introduction to practical draw mechanics

• Ready and carry positions

• Speed reloading fundamentals

• Marksmanship development at practical distances

• Key concepts related to personal defense

• Overview of Ohio CCW laws and lawful use of deadly force

Instruction is adjusted to the needs and experience level of the students.

Training Format & Safety

Live-fire training conducted on an outdoor range.

All safety rules and instructor directions must be followed. Students who are unable to operate safely will be removed from the course.

Equipment Requirements

Handgun

• Modern defensive handgun or revolver in proper working condition

• Outside the Waistband (OWB) or Inside the Waistband (IWB) holster suggested but not required

Magazines / Reloads

• Minimum three handgun magazines or speed loaders

• Belt-mounted reload carrier suggested but not required

Ammunition

• Factory-produced training ammunition matching firearm caliber

• Minimum 150 rounds

• 200 rounds recommended

Additional Equipment

• Eye protection

• Ear protection (electronic hearing protection recommended)

• Seasonally appropriate clothing suitable for outdoor activity

• Closed-toe shoes or boots

• Baseball-style cap or visor

• Water, sports drinks, and snacks

Please note that the range facility does not have running water or improved facilities.

Prerequisites

• No formal prerequisites are required.

• Prior handgun experience is preferred but not mandatory.

  • If this will be your first time firing a handgun, please contact us before class so we can ensure appropriate support.

Eligibility includes:

• Legal ability to possess and use a firearm

• Willingness to follow safety rules and instruction

Administrative

• Must be a U.S. citizen legally eligible to receive instruction

• Government-issued photo identification required

• Signed waiver required for participation
